Instagram Post Collage (4:5 Portrait)

A 4:5 portrait post takes up more of the screen than a square one, so it holds attention longer as people scroll. The editor opens on a 1080×1350 canvas with Editorial: a bold cover image and supporting shots, magazine-style.

Why portrait beats square in the feed

Instagram's feed is a column of posts, and a 4:5 image takes up more of it than a square or landscape one. That extra height is room for a collage: a strong cover photo plus a row of details, without anything shrinking to thumbnail size. Editorial uses the space like a magazine page — one image leads, the others support it.

Making a carousel

One collage works well as a recap. For a longer story, export two or three collages at the same 4:5 size and post them together as a carousel — a cover collage first, then the details. Keeping the same layout and background colour across the slides makes the set feel planned.

Tips

  • 4:5 is the tallest shape Instagram's feed shows without cropping — use it instead of square for more screen space.
  • Your profile grid previews posts as a cropped rectangle, so keep the key subject near the centre.
  • Use the title overlay for a place or date; it stays readable even at feed size.

Questions

Why 4:5 instead of square for Instagram?
A 1080×1350 portrait post is 25% taller than a 1080×1080 square, so it fills more of the feed on phones.
Will Instagram crop my collage?
Not in the feed — 4:5 is fully supported. Your profile grid shows a cropped preview, but the full post stays intact.
